"When are you speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile admirers have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to form a group."

"Therefore all is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words follow departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed resilience called for a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

However the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
