On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
